Best Practices for Site Admins, Moderators, and Editors?

I just deleted a comment that someone posted to this blog.  It wasn’t too bad…the guy was being critical, and I did not agree with him.  He is entitled to his opinion, so I would have left his post up, except that he did not leave his name, link to his blog, or anything.  He (or she) commented on my blog…their first time here I am sure…and was critical right from the start.  I was left with 3 choices: 1) Ignore it and leave the critical post up there, 2) Post a rebuttal opinion (which I wrote and it was very good, but I deleted as well), or 3) Just delete it.  Since he left no info about himself or herself, I decided for option #3.

But I am wrestling with the same type of issues on FaithItUp.com.  When has someone gone too far, so that they should be deleted and banned from the site?  I don’t want it to be a subjective decision on my part, since then they will just get mad about it.  I plan to write some guidelines and policies, but does anyone know of some already out there?

Also, what about chat rooms and forums?  Any best practices for moderators and editors?

And back to this case…any best practices for editing your own blog comments?

Please reply if you know of any documentation, white papers, articles, sites, etc already dealing with these types of issues.
